Fact or Fiction?
Some people just attract rumors and myths. Keith Moon was one of those people. Every Who fan knows at least one crazy story about their insane drummer, but how many of these stories are actually true? This page aims to disprove rumors or substantiate some truths.
Keith was born in 1947 Status: FALSE This rumor was started by the man himself. When The Who started to gain more fame (around 1965), everyone was impressed with Keith's drumming, especially because he was so young. Well, Keith decided that if talent at his age impressed people, why not tell people he was even younger? So Keith began telling everyone that he was actually 18, which would make his birth year 1947. Somehow this little fabrication found its way into musical history books, and everyone accepts it as fact. But let it be known, from here on out, that Keith Moon was, in fact, born in 1946. Keith drove a car into a swimming pool Status: UNDETERMINED Even people who know absolutely nothing else about The Who or Keith have heard this story. Keith claimed in a 1972 Rolling Stone interview that he drove a Lincoln Continental into a hotel pool. After reading Tony Fletcher's Keith Moon biography, I (and everyone else who read it) was led to believe that this story was not entirely true. The book claimed that the pool story came from a fusing of two stories; the first story goes like this: Keith celebrated his 21st birthday at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan. There was drinking, food-fighting, and "debagging" of the birthday boy (they pulled his pants down). As Keith went running out of the room, naked from the waist down, he tripped and chipped one of his front teeth (it was fixed that same night). After that, a lot of drunken guests began destroying the room where the party was held, and threw things into the hotel pool. There was a huge bill (the exact number goes anywhere from $24,000 to $50,000) that no one is entirely sure who paid for. The other half of the story comes from an incident where Keith purchased a milk float (a small, slow-moving truck that delivers fresh milk) and decided to drive it into the pond near his house. He didn't make it that far; Keith crashed the milk float into a hedge. However, in the April 2007 issue of Uncut magazine, Roger Daltrey says that the car-in-the-pool story is 100% TRUE. He says there was a $50,000 bill and everything because Keith drove a car into a pool during his birthday party. So...I don't know what to believe anymore. I'll keep it as undetermined. We may never know the full, true story. Keith killed his friend Neil Boland after running him over with a car Status: TRUE Unfortunately, this one is 100% true. Basically, Keith and his crew (wife Kim, friend Larry Smith, Smith's girlfriend, and Neil) attended the opening of a new pub called the Cranbourne Rooms on January 4, 1970. For some unexplained reason, this particular event had attracted a large population of skinheads. And skinheads, apparently, have no time for celebrities in their midst. Keith and the others hung around until closing time, by which time it was clear that a fight was going to break out. So the group made their way outside the pub. The skinheads were leaving too, though, since the pub was closing, and they crowded around Keith's Bentley while Neil (serving as Keith's driver) tried to drive away. Neil eventually climbed out of the car, hoping to clear a path. The skinheads attacked; Neil was struck to the ground. Meanwhile, Keith took the wheel of the Bentley and tried to drive way. No one had seen Neil fall. When Keith hit the pedal, Neil was struck, crushed, and dragged by the car. Although police reports show that Keith was drunk at the time (plus Keith didn't have a driver's license), he wasn't charged with a crime. However, the incident haunted him for the rest of his life. |
